Engine Displacement Calculator
Calculate engine displacement from the cylinder bore, piston stroke and number of cylinders, in cubic inches, cubic centimeters and liters.
Engine displacement formula
Displacement = π ÷ 4 × bore² × stroke × number of cylinders
Bore is the cylinder diameter and stroke is how far the piston travels. Displacement is the total volume swept by all the pistons.
Worked example
A V8 with a 4.00 in bore and a 3.48 in stroke: 0.7854 × 16 × 3.48 × 8 = 349.8 cubic inches, which is 5,733 cc or about 5.7 liters.

Frequently asked questions
What does engine displacement mean?
The combined volume all pistons sweep in one full cycle, a common measure of engine size.
Does boring out an engine increase displacement?
Yes. A larger bore increases the swept volume of every cylinder.
What is an oversquare engine?
One with a bore larger than its stroke, which usually favors higher RPM.
How many cc is a liter?
1,000 cc.
