Weighted Grade Calculator

Enter each grading category with its average and its weight as a percentage of the final grade. See your weighted grade now and how much of the course is still to be graded.

How to use the weighted grade calculator

  1. Find the grading breakdown in your syllabus, for example Tests 40%, Homework 20%, Labs 15% and Final exam 25%.
  2. Enter each category, your current average in it, and its weight.
  3. Leave the grade blank for any category that has not been graded yet, such as the final exam. The calculator will show your grade based only on the work done so far.

Weighted grade formula

Weighted grade = Σ(category grade × category weight) ÷ Σ(weights of graded categories)

Each category contributes its grade multiplied by its weight. If only some categories are graded, dividing by the weight graded so far gives your current standing instead of penalising you for work that has not happened yet.

Worked example

Tests 84% (40%), homework 95% (20%) and labs 90% (15%) are graded, and the 25% final has not happened yet. Contributions: 84×0.40 = 33.6, 95×0.20 = 19, 90×0.15 = 13.5. Total 66.1 points out of the 75% graded, so the current grade is 66.1 ÷ 75 × 100 = 88.13%, a B+.

Weighted grade vs simple average

A simple average treats every category equally. In the example above, the simple average of 84, 95 and 90 is 89.67%, which is higher than the true weighted grade of 88.13% because the heavily weighted tests have the lowest score. Weighting gives bigger categories a bigger say.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category grade by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight of the categories that have grades. With weights that add to 100%, this is the same as adding up each grade × weight ÷ 100.

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

The calculator still works. It divides by the weights you entered, so the result is your grade across those categories. It also tells you the total so you can spot a missing category.

How do I include a final exam that hasn't happened yet?

Leave its grade blank but keep its weight. Your current grade is shown for the graded part, and you can use the final grade calculator to see what you need on the exam.

Why is my weighted grade lower than my average?

Your lowest scores are probably in the categories with the biggest weights. Weighting pulls the grade toward those categories.

Can I enter points instead of percentages?

For a points-based class, use the points mode on the grade calculator, which adds up points earned and points possible.
