Grade Calculator

Enter your assignments as percentages with weights, or as points earned out of points possible. Your overall grade and letter grade update as you type.

How to use the grade calculator

  1. Choose Percent + weight if your teacher gives each assignment a percentage and a weight (for example, homework is worth 20% of the grade). Choose Points earned if your gradebook shows scores like 18/20.
  2. Type each assignment on its own row. Use + Add assignment for more rows and × to remove one.
  3. Your overall grade, letter grade and a summary table appear on the right straight away.

Weights do not have to add up to 100. The calculator divides by the total weight you entered, so weights of 2, 3 and 5 give exactly the same result as 20, 30 and 50.

How your grade is calculated

With weights, each grade is multiplied by its weight, the results are added together, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights:

Grade = (g₁×w₁ + g₂×w₂ + … + gₙ×wₙ) ÷ (w₁ + w₂ + … + wₙ)

With points, every point counts equally, so the calculator adds up all the points you earned and divides by all the points that were possible:

Grade % = (total points earned ÷ total points possible) × 100

Worked example

Homework 92% (weight 20), quizzes 85% (weight 30) and a midterm of 78% (weight 50): (92×20 + 85×30 + 78×50) ÷ 100 = (1,840 + 2,550 + 3,900) ÷ 100 = 82.9%, which is a B-.

Letter grade scale

The calculator uses the standard US 4.0 scale below. Schools differ, so check your syllabus if your cut-offs are different.

Tips for checking your grade

  • Enter only the assignments that have been graded so far to see your current grade.
  • If a category such as "Participation" has no scores yet, leave it out rather than entering 0. A 0 counts as a real score.
  • To see the score you need on an upcoming exam, use the final grade calculator.
  • For category weights like "Tests 40%, Labs 25%", the weighted grade calculator shows how much of the grade is still to come.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade?

Multiply each score by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total weight. If your class uses points, add all the points you earned and divide by all the points possible, then multiply by 100.

Do the weights need to add up to 100?

No. The calculator divides by the sum of the weights you enter, so any set of weights works. Using percentages that add up to 100 just makes the numbers easier to read.

What letter grade is an 89.5%?

On the standard scale an 89.5% is a B+, because an A- starts at 90%. Many teachers round 89.5 up to 90, so check your class policy.

Is a points-based grade the same as an average of percentages?

Not always. With points, a 100-point test counts five times as much as a 20-point quiz. Averaging the percentages instead gives every assignment equal weight, which can give a different answer.

Can I use this for a college class?

Yes. College syllabi usually list category weights, so pick Percent + weight and enter each category's average with its weight.
