Split Calculator

Enter a bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people to see the tip, the total and how much each person pays.

How to split a bill

Tip = bill × tip % Each person = (bill + tip) ÷ number of people

Worked example

A $86.40 bill with an 18% tip adds $15.55, for a total of $101.95. Split four ways, each person pays $25.49.

Tipping tips

  • In the US, 15–20% is customary for table service.
  • Some people tip on the pre-tax amount; enter the subtotal as the bill to do that.
  • Check whether a service charge is already included for large groups.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?

Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. On $45, 10% is $4.50, so 20% is $9.

Should I tip before or after tax?

Either is common. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly cheaper.

How do I split unevenly?

Work out each person’s items, then add their share of tax and tip in proportion.

Can I round up each share?

Yes. Choose Up to $1 and the calculator shows how much extra is collected.
