Gravel Calculator
Find how much gravel, crushed stone, river rock or sand you need in cubic yards and tons for a driveway, path, patio base or drainage area.
How to calculate gravel
Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27 Tons = cubic yards × density (tons per cubic yard)
Gravel is usually sold by the ton, but you measure the space in feet. The calculator finds the volume first and then converts it to weight using a typical density for the material you choose.
Worked example
A driveway 50 ft long and 10 ft wide with 4 inches of gravel: 50 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 166.7 ft³, which is 6.17 cubic yards. At 1.4 tons per yard that is 8.64 tons.
Typical gravel densities
| Material | Tons per cubic yard | Pounds per cubic yard |
|---|---|---|
| General gravel | 1.4 | 2,800 |
| Crushed stone | 1.35 | 2,700 |
| Pea gravel | 1.3 | 2,600 |
| River rock | 1.25 | 2,500 |
| Sand (dry) | 1.35 | 2,700 |
| Crusher run / road base | 1.5 | 3,000 |
Real weights depend on stone type, size and moisture, so ask your supplier for their figure if you need an exact order.
How deep should gravel be?
- Walkways and paths: 2–3 inches of pea gravel or crushed stone.
- Patio or paver base: 4–6 inches of compacted crusher run.
- Driveways: 8–12 inches total, built in layers: larger base stone, then a 2–4 inch top layer.
- Drainage trenches: fill to the depth of the trench around the pipe.
Frequently asked questions
How many tons of gravel do I need for a driveway?
Multiply length × width × depth in feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by about 1.4. A 50 × 10 ft driveway with 4 inches of gravel needs about 8.6 tons.
How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?
Usually 2,500–3,000 lb, or about 1.25–1.5 tons, depending on the stone and how wet it is.
How much area does a ton of gravel cover?
At 2 inches deep, one ton covers about 115 square feet. At 4 inches deep it covers about 58 square feet.
Should I compact gravel?
Base layers under patios and driveways should be compacted in 2–3 inch lifts. Compaction reduces volume by roughly 10–15%, so order a little extra.
Is a metric tonne the same as a ton?
No. A US ton is 2,000 lb. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, which is about 2,205 lb.
