Flooring Calculator
Add each room’s length and width to find total square footage, then see how much flooring to buy with waste, how many boxes that is and the material cost.
How to measure for flooring
- Measure each room’s length and width in feet at the widest points.
- Multiply length × width to get square feet, and add the rooms together.
- Split L-shaped rooms into rectangles and enter each one.
- Add 10% for cuts and waste (15% for diagonal or patterned layouts).
- Divide by the coverage per box and round up.
Worked example
A 12 × 14 ft living room (168 sq ft) plus a 10 × 10 ft bedroom (100 sq ft) is 268 sq ft. Adding 10% gives 294.8 sq ft, which is 15 boxes at 20 sq ft per box. At $3.50 per sq ft, 300 sq ft of flooring costs $1,050.
Buy all boxes from the same production lot so the color matches, and keep a spare box for future repairs.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Usually 10%. Use 15% or more for diagonal patterns, herringbone or rooms with many corners.
How do I measure a room with a closet?
Measure the closet as its own rectangle and add it as a separate row.
How do I convert square meters to square feet?
Multiply by 10.764. 20 m² is about 215 sq ft.
Does this include underlayment and trim?
No. Underlayment usually covers the same area as the flooring; trim is measured by the room perimeter.
