Rounding Calculator

Round a number to the nearest whole number, tenth, hundredth, thousandth, ten, hundred or thousand, using the rounding method you need.

How to round a number

  1. Find the digit in the place you are rounding to.
  2. Look at the digit immediately to its right.
  3. If that digit is 5 or more, add 1 to the rounding digit. If it is 4 or less, leave it.
  4. Drop every digit after the rounding place (or replace them with zeros for whole-number places).

Worked examples

3.14159 to the nearest hundredth: the hundredths digit is 4 and the next digit is 1, so it rounds to 3.14. 2,768 to the nearest hundred: the next digit is 6, so it rounds up to 2,800.

Half to even, also called banker’s rounding, reduces bias when many numbers are added up, so it is common in finance and statistics.

Frequently asked questions

What is 4.65 rounded to the nearest tenth?

4.7, because the digit after the tenths place is 5, which rounds up.

How do you round to the nearest whole number?

Look at the tenths digit. If it is 5 or more, round up; otherwise drop the decimals.

What is banker’s rounding?

A method that rounds exact halves to the nearest even digit, so 2.5 becomes 2 and 3.5 becomes 4.

Does rounding change negative numbers differently?

Half up rounds halves away from zero, so −2.5 becomes −3. Always up and always down follow the number line.
